my godson has mowed our lawn the last four times he mowed his lawn. it's times like this where I sit there is awe of what a good kid he is. a lot of kids today could care less about helping others, or only do it to get something or avoid something. my godson refuses to let us pay him. we bought him a flat of varying flowers to plant in his garden as a thank you. he even trims the yard...

just when you think kids today lack initiative and care for their fellow man, one comes along and surprises you. james has surprised me his whole life, and always will. I have yet to find a kid as generous and sweet as him. he amazes me. I can only hope he rubs off on bradley (so far it seems he has), and that nova can take a page out of his book. nova is the picture of the "princess syndrome," but she doesn't have to be. of course, james is the only sane one in a family that has about half the DSM-IV represented. it's a lot like my family, haha. but he is a great kid. good head on his shoulders, good morals, no insanity.

I hope he continues to amaze.

(I just wanted to dote on my baby!)

do you think gift cards are practical or impersonal? practical at some time, impersonal and thoughtless at others?

I personally do not like to give or receive these because it smacks of a lack of imagination. if I get them in addition to something else, it doesn't bother me. same with giving them in addition to something else. I like to put thought into gifting, and would hope people put thought into giving me things. even if you get me something I don't really use I would still find it better than handing me a gift card to anywhere, unless I have expressed a desire for one. I gave the godkids 5 dollar gift cards in their easter baskets, with loads of other little things.

I was just thinking about this because I really don't like the idea of giving nova a gift card for graduation and going on my merry way. it just doesn't feel right.

though there are times when a gift card is practical, like when someone has gotten something, like a game system, and needs accessories, then maybe a gift card to gamstop is fine. or if nomeone needs money more than things, then a PREPAID visa is fine. not like a gift card to walmart, but a prepaid unspecified card that can be used anywhere.

I don't know.

what are your thoughts?

DAYTON, Ohio - A judge sentenced Angela Norman to nine years in prison Thursday morning for starving her disabled daughter, who weighed 28 pounds when she died last year.

Montgomery County Common Pleas Judge Mary Katherine Huffman told Norman, 42, that there was plenty of help available for her and her daughter.

"I am at a lost at what to say that can justify any of this," said Huffman.

Norman pleaded guilty last month to involuntary manslaughter.

Makayla Norman, 14, who had cerebral palsy, was covered in bedsores, living in filth and starved to the point that she looked more like a skeleton than a teenager when she died March 1, 2011, just minutes after medics got her to Children's Medical Center of Dayton.

The Montgomery County Coroner's Office concluded Makayla Norman died from nutritional and medical neglect complicated by her chronic condition, ruling the death a homicide.

A coroner's official called her "the worst malnourished child I think we've ever seen."

Three nurses responsible for providing or supervising the care of Makayla also are facing charges in her death.

</fieldset>

Like many others, I posted a picture of my mom and me for Mother's Day. It's in my backyard and from my first communion in 1982, 9 months after my grandmother, my mom's mom, passed away from brain cancer.

Yesterday morning my phone starts ringing off the hook. It's my aunt Maureen, my godmother and mom's sister. She tells me that I need to go look at the photo and look in the trees to the right of my mom's head and you can see an image of my grandmother's face in the trees. It took me a minute but I saw it! You can see her glasses and half her face outline. When my profile picture is small (like on the newsfeed home page) I can see the whole face clearly. It's insane.

I'm attaching the picture so you guys can see if you can see it. I'll tell you where to look if necessary. My whole family is freaking out about it. It's amazing.

Seriously. They're SERIOUSLY actually giving this description to people to be on the watch for suspicious activity...on the area installations.

If my husband was wearing sunglasses...THIS COULD BE HIM. It could also be at least 3 of my neighbors. And about 15 people that I happened to notice eye color for while I bought eggs, milk, & bread at the commissary on Saturday.

I am curious if they are really this desperate for leads, or really this stupid.

He's missing his blouse & headcover b/c duh - those have names/rank sewn in to them.

The other day, I was watching a dog sniff the air, I think, trying to locate their owner. And I got to wondering, clearly animals know and recognize their owners. Which means they have memory that works. And memory as I know it clearly has ....... components of image, odour, sound, but in humans mostly image. For instance, I can call a persons image to mind easily, but while I can recognize a familiar persons odour, I can not pull that scent out of my memory.

But dogs know the scent of their owners, and clearly recognize it. And I think must have memory of it, can call that smell out of their minds to know when their owners are close, have some sort of mental odour ..... image isn't the correct word, but the equivalent - sort of a smell cloud data bank that they can easily pull up. That is outside of human understanding.

Not really sure what this post is about, but I was just trying to figure out animal memory storage and recall as I was working away. Somehow I think dogs must have odour images that they can call up to identify different things.
